La notte del 30 agosto 2020 il Barclays Center di New York si è illuminato in occasione della 37esima edizione degli MTV Video Music Awards. Una serata che ha visto Lady Gaga sbaragliare tutti, aggiudicandosi ben 5 statuette: Artista dell’Anno, Miglior Tricon, Canzone dell’Anno per “Rain On Me”, Miglior Featuring e Miglior Cinematografia sempre per “Rain On Me”.
Non c’è che dire, un bello strike per la cantante che, nel discorso di accettazione, ha ricordato: “Proteggetevi e indossate la mascherina. So che sembro un disco rotto nel ripetervelo, ma è un segno di rispetto. Questo non è stato un anno facile per molte persone, ma quello che vedo nel mondo è un enorme trionfo di coraggio.”.
Oltre a Lady Gaga, tanti altri artisti internazionali hanno assaporato il gusto della vittoria: ad esempio Machine Gun Kelly ha guadagnato il suo primo Moon Person come Best Alternative con “Bloody Valentine“, Miley Cyrus ha portato a casa i premi Best Art Direction e Best Editing per “Mother’s Daughter”, mentre al gruppo sudcoreano Blackpink è andata la Canzone dell’Anno con “How You Like That”.
Non è mancato un pensiero rivolto a Chadwick Boseman, l’attore di “Black Panther” scomparso 3 giorni fa. A prendere la parola in merito è stata la presentatrice degli VMAS 2020, Keke Palmer: “So che è dura in questo momento, ma dobbiamo mantenere vivo l’amore. Wakanda per sempre. Le vite nere contano.”. Quest’ultimo un riferimento anche alla situazione che sta scuotendo gli animi negli Stati Uniti, ossia le proteste nate in seguito all’uccisione di George Floyd e all’aggressione di Jacob Blake.
